Did you know you are a beautiful work of art?

"Knitting is very good for you", said the 80-year-old lady I was visiting. "The hand-to-eye coordination helps keep your brain healthy as you get older, and is a great stress reliever". Her enthusiasm for her subject was catching, and as I said my goodbyes, she had me thinking perhaps I should take it up. 

Reflecting on this later, I remembered something from the Bible: "You knitted me together in my mother's womb" (Psalm 139:13).  I love this. Just imagine, God, watching over you in the womb. Forming and creating you, like an artist making a beautiful work of art. Imparting to you all the potential for your life: to love and be loved and to make a difference in the world. 

Yet so many people miss this. They dwell on the disappointments, failures, and rejections in life, and therefore don't rate themselves highly. Well, this part of the Bible is God saying to you, find hope in me. I have created you in my image. Just let this sink in. You are special and important in his eyes. 

When people lose hope, they stop imagining a better future. All they see is the same or worse. Knowing God values you and thinks you are special means you can look forward to the plans he has for you, in this life and the next. Gone is the need to compare yourself with others or worry about being judged on how you look, your background, or the education you've had. False messages are easy to believe when we have no other framework to understand why we are here and our purpose in life. But for those who, through faith in Jesus Christ, know God as their heavenly Father, being 'knitted together in the womb' gives a new perspective and basis for liking yourself and enjoying your existence.

If you are going through difficult times and tempted to question your value and worth, think on the above, and may I suggest you also look at the life of Jesus in the Bible (books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). See how Jesus encouraged everyone he met to relate deeply with God through understanding how his death on the cross is the gateway to eternal life. Let Jesus' words, "I choose you" (John 15:6), raise in you the living hope the Bible talks about (1 Peter 1:3). Ask him to show you Heaven's perspective.
